ASCB is an inclusive, international community of biologists studying the cell, the fundamental unit of life. The work of our faculty and students covers all levels of biological organization and a variety of biological systems and model organisms. The curriculum for majors covers modern biology from molecules and cells through organisms, populations, and ecosystems, and emphasizes the conceptual, historical, and technical progression of biological science. 6. Cell Biology: It is the study of morphological, organizational, biochemical, physiological, genetic, developmental, pathological and evolutionary aspects of cell and its components.
Our world-class graduate faculty span the full continuum of biological subdisciplines, thus affording a true cross-disciplinary education in Biology. As a biology student you will have developed formidable scientific nous which, coupled with close analytical skills, organizational skills and attention to detail make biology graduates well suited to careers as a research scientist, biologist or lab technician in industry, healthcare or education.
The study of living things has undergone tremendous expansion in recent years, and topics such as cell biology, developmental biology, evolutionary biology and ecology, all of which are covered in the course, are advancing at a great pace. The Gonzalez Lab built the Large Experiment Array of Ponds (LEAP) to do experimental evolution with aquatic ecosystems in the field. 10. Ecology: It is the study of living organisms is relation to other organism and their environment.
Research into the origin of life, abiogenesis , amounts to an attempt to discover the origin of the first cells. You will study living organisms in a range of environments, both terrestrial and marine, and the content is assessed as part of the first-year examinations. Interdisciplinary in nature, the Biochemistry & Biophysics (BCBP) graduate program includes a broad grounding in the mathematical, chemical, physical, and biological sciences.
These experiences prime our students for graduate and medical school admissions as well as various careers in biology. The Biology majors can be used as preparation for graduate school or professional careers in technical fields, the health sciences and education. This field has become increasingly important in recent years, and requires students to develop significant mathematical and computer science nous, much like the interdisciplinary field of bioinformatics, which involves developing and improving on methods for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data and developing software tools to generate useful biological knowledge.
Our state-of-the-art Biology laboratories allow instructors to guide students in advanced research methods. The Lewis Lab studies persister cells responsible for tolerance to antibiotics, uncultured bacteria of the environment and the microbiome, and works on drug discovery. Each of these cells can carry out processes, e.g. anabolic and catabolic reactions, in order to sustain life. THey also use mtDNA mutations to trace mtDNA lineages and to study human evolution.
